Bryce Elder benefited from good luck throughout the season. And even if he faces the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday afternoon. He should come back to Earth a bit. Meanwhile, Bailey Falter will start for Pittsburgh.
This season, Elder has an ERA of 3.43 versus a 4.38 xERA. His average exit speed is 89.7 mph. And his hard hit rate is 40.3%. He’s been regressing since the All-Star braking with a 5.85 ERA and only 12 strikeouts in 20 innings.
Falter is not the best beginner. But he’s not much worse than the Elder. Falter holds a 4.87 ERA versus a 4.66 xERA this season, but has an excellent 4.7% walk rate. Strongly (37.3%) is still lower than Elder’s.
The Pirates have 99 wRC+ with an 8.6% walk rate and 0.743 OPS over the past month.
The Braves have 96 wRC+ with a 10.1% walk rate and a left winger 0.729 OPS over the same period. That gave Pittsburgh a slight advantage.
Atlanta has a slight advantage with August’s 4.11 bullpen xFIP over the Pirates’ 4.72 xFIP, but Falter doesn’t walk much and may break deep into the game.

Hunter Brown and the Houston Astros face off against Dean Kremer and the Baltimore Orioles.
The Astros hit right-handers better than they did in the past month. And it was the right play in this duel.
Brown has a 3.86 second half ERA over 23 1/3 pitching innings this season. He has a 26.5% strike rate versus a 7.8% walk rate. His average exit speed is 90.4 mph with a hard hit rate. 43.8%. He also boasted a 3.92 xERA vs. a 4.07 ERA.
Houston has fared well against right wingers in recent months. The Astros own a 108 wRC+, .748 OPS, and a 11.2% walk rate. That should help against Kramer. Kyle Tucker and Yordan Álvarez are worth watching as both The pair has a xwOBA greater than 0.400 and a high average exit speed.
Kremer, meanwhile, has been pretty lucky this season with a 4.61 ERA versus a 5.43 xERA. His average exit speed is 90.4 mph with a 43.8% hard hit rate, however, he only hits 21.7% of his battery and walks. Got 7.3%, his barrel rate is up almost 10%, which may not apply to the Houston lineup.

The Nationals should turn around and post a run after Michael Lorenzen doesn’t hit.
I’m worried about Aaron Nola here because he has been up and down throughout the season. His fast ball speed hit and then came back up. However, he was now struggling to find his vice.
Either way, he’s posted a 5.64 ERA over the past five matches. He is due to a positive recession, but I’m not sold.
Meanwhile, the Phillies had no problem posting winding numbers with Patrick Corbin. There’s no need to explain Corbin (he’s allowed 35 runs in his past 47 frames), but we can touch on the Phillies, who had 112 wRC+ against Southpaws last month.
The wind is expected to blow right out at Citizens Bank on Thursday, which should add to the offense. And while the Eagles’ defensive program is better than when Bryce Harper plays first base.
