Svitolina withdrew
No. 26 Elina Svitolina withdrew from the Western & Southern Open with a right foot injury. competition announcement
“I got injured during the Wimbledon match. I dealt with it well. And then the transition to hard court wasn’t easy for me. after montreal I scanned a few times and the results were not good. So the doctor advised me to get tested. Time to recover and try my best to try to recover for the US Open,” Svitolina said in a press conference. “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete with Caroline. Sorry to the fans, I really would love to play here in Cincinnati but unfortunately now I have to look after and do my best to recover.”
Svitolina was set to wildcard former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in a battle between two mothers en route to her return after maternity leave.
